The biggest mis-understanding of the ‘positive thinking’ theory led us to believe that we should be happy and cheerful all the time. We even feel guilty, ungrateful and ashamed if we let our tears fall or our anger boil… Emotions are signs and signals, they are there to let us know that something is not right, something is not working, something needs to change… There is no right or wrong emotions, what really matters is what you decide to do about them.
Here are my 5 crucial steps for dealing with negative emotions: I summarized them in the acronym 'REACH'
First, recognize these emotions. Know them... What are they? Name the emotion… Be specific— is it anger, frustration, fear, worry… Dig beneath the surface to reach the bottom of it… What is it? How do you feel? Where do you feel it in your body? Be specific. Recognizing and naming the emotion make you fully aware of them…
Then, you will need to evaluate your emotions… How strong are they? How bad? Why are you feeling this way? Assess your situation, see the big picture. Evaluate their effect on your physical body... Are you allowing them the power to negatively affect your health? Listen to your body... See what it really needs...
Third, comes acknowledgement… Own them.. It is ok to feel angry, sad, frustrated… Your emotions are not you… they are yours… It is ok to feel sad, mad or angry, emotions are signposts they are not good or bad in themselves, they are here to lead the way.
Acknowledge your right to be angry, fearful, worried… Acknowledge your beautiful human nature… And, most importantly acknowledge your power over the whole situation.
Don’t move to this fourth step until you are fully ready. I suggest practicing breathing exercises, prayers or meditation, whatever you feel comfortable with… When you regain back your sense of control; when you know exactly how you feel and why you feel it; and when you took time to assess the big picture and acknowledge your human nature, now it is time to commit… Commit to the change you want in your life… choose your direction and commit to your healing journey. change is not easy, but it is essential part of life.
The final step is healing… Healing entails work and effort… It takes time and commitment. This is why many of us just prefer the easy way… Many of us just look for the magic pill. Unfortunately it doesn’t exist… Healing comes from within… As you start on the life changing journey you committed to, you should also start on a healing journey…
- Healing your body from the negative effect of stress hormones, the over powering effect of emotional eating or the depleting effect of neglect, guilt and shame… Commit to eating healthy and restore your health, energy and vitality.
- Healing your heart from any traces of hatred, victimhood, or anger… Listen to your heart and see what it needs, love and forgive yourself before attempting to love and forgive others, be caring and compassionate towards yourself before attempting to be caring and compassionate towards others... This is not selfishness, you can not give from from an empty cup and you cannot save the world if you, yourself are drowning.
- Healing your mind from over thinking, fear or anger… Start by simple breathing exercises 5 minutes twice a day. Empty your mind and silence the chatter. Believe and trust.
- Healing your soul from doubt and mistrust… Re-new your connection with the Divine, with God and feel empowered by His protection and mercy.
Healing is a long journey… I know… I have been there, done that… Yet, believe me it is totally worth the ride… If you need a helping hand join our Facebook community and let us empower one-another.
