Heal Your Heart... Heal Your Life

This is the story of a client of mine. Let’s call her Mary. This, of course, is not her real name. Mary is a 54-year-old high school teacher living with her husband in a calm and friendly neighbourhood. Mary’s neighbours like her cheerful welcoming spirit as they greet her every morning on their way to work. Yet, Mary’s life is not as easy as it looks from the outside.

One night, the serene neighbourhood was disturbed by the sound of the ambulance at 2:00 am. Mary was rushed to the hospital with sharp pain in her chest. She was admitted immediately to the operating room for coronary bypass surgery.
If we take a closer look at Mary’s life, we will understand the source of her ‘broken’ heart. Mary is a caring loving wife. She spent the last 15 years of her marriage nurturing her husband who suffered from bipolar disorder. Her husband chronic health problems drained her energy and isolated her from any form of social life.

Mary drew a nice smile on her face every morning while her heart was bleeding and her energy was draining.  She loved her husband despites his endless fits. Still, she needed to be loved and nurtured in return. Her heart longed for its missing source of energy. And, as she ignored her Body Whispers for years, they shouted louder and louder until they turned into screams.

Mary’s operation was a wake-up call. Her life was at stake and she needed to do some changes. Many times, we cannot change our environment or circumstances, but we sure can change our perceptions, beliefs and choices and these are what matter the most.

As I helped Mary change her diet, manage her stress and choose a healthy lifestyle. I also helped her heal her heart, which is the crucial factor in her healing journey.
She needed to ditch the victimhood mentality and proceeded to embrace life with all its ups and downs. She also learned to add joys into her everyday existence; she re-engaged with her community and chose to embrace her experience with grace and gratitude not helplessness and despair.

And, as she added little pleasures, excitements and joys into her life, she no longer needed fats and sweets as her emotional comfort. She learned to nurture her heart and soul and properly nourish her body and feed her mind.

With an uplifted spirit and regained stamina, Mary now had more energy to take better care of her husband and give him the love and support he needed. Not, surprisingly, this amazing change in her personality and temper was soon reflected on his behaviour and the bipolar cycling pattern was greatly reduced. When he was in his depressive/down state, Mary had the energy to give him the care and love he needed and when he was in his grandiose/ manic phase, she now had the patience and tolerance to embrace the experience.

Mary’s story is one of tens I meet every day. The story may change, but the underlying pattern is always the same… LISTEN. Deep inside, your heart knows what it really needs. All you have to do is listen!

When we talk about heart energy, love and care, we take it abstractly, we just don’t really feel it. Our modern society taught us that if it is not seen, touched or heard than it does not exist. If science didn’t prove it, then it can’t be true… Well, science has proven it, but yet it cannot explain it.
Dr. Bernie Siegel says:
"Unconditional love is the most powerful known stimulant of the immune system. If I told patients to raise their blood levels of immune globulins or killer T cells, no one would know how. But if I can teach them to love themselves and others fully, the same changes happen automatically. The truth is: love heals"

All traditional cultures emphasized the role of the heart in the human spiritual journey. Now science is starting to acknowledge the heart as more than a mere pump that delivers blood to our organs.
There is no better time in history for us to remind ourselves of the crucial need for us to heal our hearts.

We now know that love, care, peace, and forgiveness can physically heal while anger, grudge and hatred can precipitate bodily illness. We know that fear, stress and worry compromise our immunity and alter our physiology.

This is my invitation to all of us to start restoring love and care in our hearts so that we can restore health to our bodies and peace to our planet.

Subhanallah! Mary's story was very similar to that of my Mom's one.
My mom had taken a great pains trying to give our family education, Inspiration and above all, the encouragement to strive for the best in both this world and the hereafter. She grew older and faced many hard times, always trying to make life dance to her beat. She suffered greatly, unable to come to grips with her limited control. She was too engulf to understand what true control meant. Every time something happened that she couldn't delete or alter, it caused her to fight harder each time. It was exhausting! She was constantly trying to defeat and defy the unseen, unknown force constantly trying to control something she wasn't sure of. That complex sent her down a long, dark path. Attempting to embrace anything that caused her to feel slightly free and in control, she went spinning out of control, happy and content on the outside, dying and hollow on the inside. Anytime that desolate feeling would try to reach the surface, she would bury it deeper. She was poor to understand that no amount of camouflaging can change reality.
I know my mom was not an angry person. But she felt that she had an excuse. She always thought that everyone else was the problem, because it was because of them that she felt angry.
One night our neighborhood was disturbed by the sound of an ambulance, my mom fall down unconsciously and she was admitted to the hospital. Me, my brothers & sisters were all terrified, we watched our anchor giving away in a terrible situation. I can't describe how we felt. We went to the hospital, after spending like 6hrs in the ICU, she was transferred to amenity. We went to see her condition, but she can't recognize who we are, almost 5days in that situation. I felt like the whole world was turning upside down. The woman who had brought me into this world, and nurtured me, and advised me, and chastised me, and loved me, didn't recognize me. It was as if I was trying to walk up the side of hill of feathers.
After about 3month, they sent her back home, but she can't walk, she can't talk, she became just like a new born baby, totally dependent.
After spending so much time in that condition at home. Gradually, Allah(SWA) opened her mouth, and suddenly she start to become consciously aware. Alhamdulillah, within a mean time after she gain her senses, she delve into knowledge of what will make her feel free, to heal her body and soul, and with the help of Healing Body & Soul she now regain her strength and add joy to her life. She change her diet, she start managing her stress and choose a healthy lifestyle. She change her perception and belief too. No matter how much she wanted to be upset with people, the balance comes in knowing that Allah(SWA) decreed this for her, so It very easy to cooperate with the inevitable.
Now she's normal, but she can't walk, only with the help of a stick.
She's everything to me, she taught me that; the only hardship we ever really encounter in life is a negative attitude towards things too sophisticated for us to appreciate. Life's twists & turns may not have been what we wanted or expected, but somehow, it's all happening to teach us something we otherwise could never learn. Trouble will find you, hurt and anguish too, we can't avoid them. The most we should do is prepare for them by seeking nearness to Allah(SWA), and asking Him for forbearance and strength.
Tough though it was, now my mother and I started to find a new way to understand each others point of views and forge a friendship. We start to draw on each other's strength, endeavor in new projects together and inspire ourselves to be the best we can.
