Are you a Melancholic?

6/5/2012

Picture
His student asked for permission to operate on him, "you taught us," he said, "you could see again". "No," he firmly replied, "I've seen enough of this world!"
These were the last days of the great physician Abu Bakr Al Razi (Razis) as he decided to withdraw from a pain-filled world. Weeks later, the greatest physician of his time passed away in his bed, blind and broke.

In the language of our modern conventional medicine, physicians will probably diagnose him with depression. In his own medicinal system, though, Abu Bakr al Razi wasn't depressed, he was just a 'Melancholic'.
'Melancholic' is a body type, or temperament, as it is called in Greek, Unani, Islamic medicines, and modern-day Western herbalism. This is one of the four main human temperaments that reflect our human personality, inclinations, health and life choices. An old-day physician needed to know his client's temperament before any diagnosis could be made. This bit of information  makes all the difference. A sanguine (another human temperament) who says these exact words, is definitely depressed, while a melancholic, is not. He is just trying to restore his inner balance by choosing to temporarily seclude from a cruel disturbed environment.

A melancholic person may seem depressed to an unexperienced eye. As he/she tends to worry about the entire world's problems, he/she carries lots of woes and aches. A melancholic genuinely tries to ease the world's misery and pains. He/she has a very sensitive personality, he is very kind-hearted, giving and caring. He is an introvert by nature, may spend days non-end in reflection and pondering percolating his creative ideas until they finally see the light. No hurry. Despite being a very responsible person, boundaries, rules, and deadlines stress him/her beyond measures.

Melancholy is the temperament of philosophers, writers, artists and reformers. They may choose not to actively engage in changing the world and leading the crowd, yet they surely achieve that through their sincere consistent work.
Still, melancholics are the most prone of all temperaments to depression and isolation as they not only drag their own pains, but carry the burdens and woes of the entire world. Although they are introvert, they need to be socially involved to feel their use and value in serving their community. This is the only cure for their aching hearts. Engagement in social services and/or in a valuable cause and mission is essential for easing their depressed nature and ending their tendency for isolation.

It is important to note here, that people rarely carry one pure temperament. So, generally, you will rarely find a pure melancholic. It is usually a unique combination of 2 or more among the 4 temperaments (sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic, and melancholic) with one of them being dominant. and this is what creates our uniqueness as human beings.

How do you detect a melancholic?
A melancholic is an introvert, extremely sensitive, and creative person. He/she is very caring, yet he rarely shows his care or expresses it verbally. Their care is evident in times of need. He/she loves pondering, day dreaming, reflecting and deep thinking. He/she usually has a poor self-image, is pessimistic, sees all the negative and wrongs in a given situation. Physically, a melancholic has dry and cold constitution (i.e. dry skin, cold hands and feet...) and a fairly poor digestion. Their appetite varies according to their mood and they experience frequent gas and bloating. They usually do not have a very strong constitution nor do they have a great immunity. Ambiguity, stress, and rapid frequent life changes could seriously wreck havoc with their physical, mental and psychological health.

What do melancholics need?
If you are a melancholic, you will definitely benefit from lots of sunshine, gentle but continuous physical activity, and connection with earth and nature. You will also need lots of hugs and support from a close friend or a trusted relative. You need a sincere trustworthy friend to share your thoughts, perceptions, and insights with. And most importantly, you have to keep yourself engaged in a long-term meaningful project or life mission. Get your share of reflection and inner pondering, yet keep socially active and avoid total isolation.
On the physical plane, melancholics need light but nourishing foods. They needs lots of leafy greens and detoxifying vegetables to boost both their digestion and their immunity.

Art from the Heart

When I was a young girl, my art teacher never liked my drawings. They weren’t very ‘artistic’, she used to say. I always tried to conform to the rules: color within the lines, watch myperspectives, follow design ‘rules’… No wonder I never felt artistic enough. I never gave the chance for my deep feelings to be expressed, explored or released on papper.

It was only when I decided to draw for ‘myself’, not for pleasing anyone else that I started to feel free. Only then, I gave room for my true creative self. ART for me is my therapeutic tool that heals life stresses, worries, woes, aches and pains. Art therapists teach that the word ART stands for: Access, Release, & Transform. And, this is exactly what it does for me. Colors, shapes, pictures, symbols, chosen ephemera, collaged bits and pieces, fabric scraps, and charms… all have meaning, a deep meaning hidden in every selection, in every choice you make, in every decision that alters the shape of your canvas as it alters the shape of your life. These selections are your mean to access your heart feelings, your insights, ideas, and creative thoughts, as well as your hidden hopes and fears. Your canvas, or any other medium you choose to express your art on, is your way of releasing. Releasing negative thoughts and beliefs, releasing erroneous perceptions and hurtful feelings that no longer serve you at this point of your journey. And, as your piece of art develops, as it takes shape and form, you gently, yet powerfully, start the transformation journey. You experience your anger melting into acceptance and forgiveness; your frustration converted into peace and wisdoms; your challenges transmuted into lessons and tools for growth; your pains shaped into a mold of satisfaction and insights… With my art, I heal my heart.

Surprisingly, now that I no longer wait for others appreciations and acceptance, I receive loads of that. Many friends try to convince me to take a professional step in art practice, sell my paintings or accept orders. I diligently refuse. “It will just take the magic out of it” I reply. It will force me back to look outside for acceptance rather than looking inside for answers. I choose to keep my ART as my heart healing ally.

Try it for your self
Have a wonderful week

Reclaim Your Creative Spirit

I have a friend talented for making feast out of leftovers. She isn’t a superb cook, but she is a great food crafter. She manages to turn any food you have in your fridge or even any simple cans or wilted vegetables into a whole meal, appetizer, main course, dessert and all. With few simple artistic touches, with an amazing uplifting spirit and a great creative soul, a whole feast is ready in no time. It is of no surprise that her amazing talent was reflected into her everyday life. My friend is also known for turning problems, pitfalls, and challenges into lessons and opportunities. She sees potential in every trial; she perceives success behind every failure, and spots beauty hidden in every corner. She has quite a big share of trials and challenges in her life, but I never saw her frowning, complaining or fretting. A beautiful smile always shines on her face radiating love, care, content, and satisfaction and spreading an amazing spirit of peace around her wherever she went.

Life crafting, like food crafting, is a talent, a gift and a choice. You have the choice to eat the wilted lettuce leaves, stale bread crumbs, and the bland chicken breast that sat in your fridge for days now; or you can choose to turn them into a hearty Cesar salad and a scrumptious chicken pie that feed your senses before tickling your taste buds. In the same token, you have the choice to swallow you heart breaks, bottle up your anger, dwell on your losses; or rise above your circumstances and turn your grief and pain into opportunities and lessons. To be a life crafter you need to assume responsibility for your own life. You need to be realistic and courageous, yet optimistic and creative; and above all, you need to always keep your sense of humor.

Close to my house, there is a beautiful café with colorful and cheerful atmosphere overlooking the amazing blue azure color of the gulf sea. And, on every plate mat was carefully inscribe an amazing quote that immediately caught my eyes:
“They asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, I told them “happy”, they told me you do not understand the question, I answered, “you do not understand life!”
This amazing quote was how the owner of the BoHouse café chose to introduce himself to his customers. I guess, he also is a life crafter. As the colors and beauty of the place reflect the artistic creative soul of its owner, his words reflect his determination to craft his life as he crafts his surroundings.

Remember, it is always about choices: Your Choices. We all have a creative spirit. You are the one who chooses to let it shine or burry it under endless life challenges.

Can My thoughts heal me?

Experiments on rats showed that coupling the smell of camphor with the injection of an immune boosting drug could later cause the animals to respond by increasing their immunity just upon smelling the camphor. The opposite was also true. Coupling the smell of the camphor with an immune suppressive drug caused the rats’ immune system to be conditioned for immune suppression upon smelling camphor alone. Isn’t it fascinating!! The same agent could act as immunosuppressant or immune booster depending only on the mental state these animals associate with it, which in turn depends on the pre-programmed memory stored in their cells (Chopra, Quantum Healing).

Folk medicine has always been using the mental state of awareness to overcome minor viral infections. Family physician, upon examining a child with warts and lumps, would show his fascination with this skin formation and ask the child to sell it for a coin. The child’s mind, striving for the shiny new coin, would boost the immune system to get rid of the warts. Few days later, the warts would disappear and the child collects his coin (Miller, Deep Healing)

An adjusted state of mind coupled with unconditioned belief is all it takes to claim your internal medicine, our God-given internal pharmacy that possesses the perfect cure for every ailment. But the question remains: How easy could it be?

Thousands of cases of spontaneous healing from serious ailments like cancer and multiple sclerosis have been recorded, but still, according to Dr. Chopra, the rate of spontaneous remission in cancer patients (this is cancer dissipating on its own without any medical intervention) is as low as one in twenty thousand cases.

The access to our ‘endogenous pharmaceutics’ is not as easy as it might seem. It is not just a matter of meditation, relaxation, positive thinking, or mental affirmations. For deep healing, we need to reverse a pattern engraved in every cell of our body. We need to reach each and every cell and talk to it in the language that it understands, in a higher ‘intelligence’, as Dr. Chopra calls it, which is delivered in the form of molecules, the neuropeptides and neurotransmitters that Dr. Candace Pert calls: the ‘molecules of emotions’. In order for you to change your molecules of emotions, you need to change not only your life style and thinking mode, but most importantly, your deeply held beliefs. You need to dig deeply enough to reach beyond the casual surface. You need to work on your subconscious as well as your conscious mind. A spiritual guru or a health advocate asking an oppressed man, an abused teenager, a rape victim, or a cancer patient to look in the mirror every morning and repeat “I love and forgive” or “I am whole and healthy”, is missing the whole point.

Breathe!!!

Sometimes we feel as if life has just stopped for us... nothing new is happening... nothing interesting... our plans are not working the way we wished them to... our dreams are not manifesting... our hearts are not pumping with excitement and enthusiasm as they used to... even our tears seem stuck not having enough energy to fall.
Sometimes, time is just passing us by…nothing new… nothing exciting… Hours follow hours… Days follow days… months and even years… We’re getting older; our hearts are sinking in our chests… Our brains’ chatter is torturing us with negativity and pessimism… What am I doing wrong? We wonder… What’s next?
If this is how you feel sometimes my friend, than know that you are not alone… We all pass by this time of our life. You can look at it as depressing, down time or you can consider it, as a friend of mine says, an incubation period… An essential period in our creativity cycle… A period that precedes all the ‘AHA’ moments!!!

When you reach your incubation period, you know that it’s time to stop… Time to breathe…
Close your eyes… take a deep breath… inhale slowly... and, as you let the air is go out, visualize it carrying with it all worries, pain, boredom, and negativity driving them away… far… far away from you… from your life… Pause… Inhale again slowly…draw fresh air filled with calm and peace… filled with compassion and love… compassion for yourself and love for who you really are… concentrate on your breath for just few minutes or as long as you wish… just breathe… Breathe in calm and serenity and breathe out anxiety and worries… Calmly and gently, breathe out any intruding thoughts or negative emotions.

Breath is an amazing healing tool… Just breathing… Try it… few seconds are enough for total rejuvenation and restoration. It brings you back to your centre of balance… To the here and now. It connects you to your own inner wisdom, grounds you in your body and generates marvellous mind self-renewal abilities.
In many languages –including Arabic- the word ‘breath’ (nafas) share the same root as the word ‘soul’ (nafs). Breathing is your first step for soul restoration… for total balance and amazing power.
In our stressful, hectic modern life, no wonder we lose our sense of balance as we lost our breath. We rarely have the time or the energy to just sit calmly and breathe…. To calm our minds and give room for our creative powers to percolate… It’s as simple as that, believe me. Try it for yourself and see how amazing power it brings.

Sometimes, we think that the answer to our problems, depression, sadness and stresses is to work more, achieve more, strive more, push harder, dig deeper… Whereas, the answer is much simpler… Slow down… Get centered… Breathe!

Breathing helps us simplify and balance our life; it helps us reconnect with the miracle of our mere existence and enjoy the feelings of grace and gratitude. Sometimes the answer is not in ‘doing’, it is just in ‘being’!

Word Play

This week we’re going to play a little game. Below is a list of words. I want you to relax, sit in a calm place, give yourself at least 10 minutes. Breathe. Follow your breathing gently and smoothly till you relax. Look at the list of the words below and go slowly through them. Pick the ones that attract you, that grab your attention and call for you. Don’t second guess. Just pick them and copy them in your journal. Now go through the words in your journal and reflect upon them. Which ones you want to draw into your life now? Which ones feel close to your heart and yet missing in your life? Which ones do you most need in order to restore your balance? Prioritize. Then, reflect some more. I want you to reduce your list to only three. Which ones?

Mine were Trust, Relax, and Courage. The meaning of these words for me may point to something different than your meanings. Everyone has its own unique experience and unique needs. What do you need? What do you need right now in your life? If you wish, you can add your own words, your own meanings.

Is it love? Is it friendship? Is it forgiveness? Intimacy? Joy? Choose your words and play with them. Make a page in your journal for each one of your words. Choose a background color. Cut images and photos from magazines that speak to you. Make a collage, doodle, draw, journal… whatever you please. You do not need to be an artist. This doesn’t have to be perfect in any way. It’s yours. Your words… Your life! Reflect on how to draw these words into your life. Reflect on why you want to draw them into your life? Reflect on your needs. On your dreams. On your heart desires. Visualize your life with these traits/characters. How would it be? How will it change? What to do you need to do to affect those changes?

PMS issues...Again!!!

20/9/2011

More and more I keep hearing complaints from women and teenage girls about PMS symptoms. That’s strange or rather odd given the fact that our grandmothers, our mothers and even ourselves in our younger age (Not that we’re not young anymore of course!!), we never experienced such complaints at least in such frequency and severity. So, why now?

Is it our diet? Our lifestyle? Or just because we didn’t know what the word PMS meant (or even that it existed) that we didn’t notice its symptoms?

My guess is: it’s the combination of all three. Our diet had dramatically changed in the past decade. We rely more on highly refined and/or processed food lacking vital nutrients and packed with synthetic chemicals. Our grandmothers’ diet was richer in whole grains, nuts, beans, and seeds. Their produce was fresh and seasonal, packed with vitamins, minerals and vital energy. The air they breathed was fresher, the water they drank was clearer; the food they ate wasn’t loaded with chemicals, colors and artificial flavors. Their lifestyle was also different. They didn’t sit all day long in front of the TV or computer screen. They didn't even have one. They socialized more (not on facebook or in internet chatting rooms), they exchanged ideas, recipes, advices and genuine support. Their life was much more physically active. They walked to the local market (no malls!!! Poor granny!), they climbed the stairs and ran errands.

And, most importantly, NO ONE TOLD THEM!!! They didn’t know that there was such thing as PMS. Not because they weren’t updated with the “latest scientific researches and discoveries”, rather, because they simply didn’t need to. Women, since the dawn of civilization, intuitively knew about that ‘time of the month’ when they were more vulnerable. Not just physically, but also emotionally. They knew that there is a time when they needed more support, love and care; another time when they may need to be more self-centered (not selfish), introvert and reflective. Yet, there are other times when they are more sociable, giving, creative and expressive. Women’s menstrual cycle expresses these different needs at different times of the month; and our grandmothers intuitively followed its natural flow.

Our grandmothers’ life, although more physically demanding (I see that as an advantage), was much less stressful. Their hearts were pure and loving; their needs were much simpler (they weren’t bombarded by self-destructive ads all day long), their intentions, goals and missions were much clearer. Their creativity was beautifully expressed in simple touches of everyday life, in a new recipe they invented, a quilt they made, a dress they’ve sewn, or a curtain they altered…

Isn’t time to learn from their wisdom? Isn’t time to stop suppressing our feelings with sweet indulgences, silencing our pains with pain ‘killers’, repressing our bloating with prescribed medications, and hiding our emotions behind soap operas? Isn’t time to listen to our inner whispers and follow our intuitive wisdom?

Life is simply all about choices. We have all the options. We just need to make the right choices concerning our diet, lifestyle, and mental, emotional, and spiritual beliefs.

Have a great day!

A technology-free weekend

19/8/2011

Last summer, my children and I, we were invited to spend the weekend at my cousins' farm in the countryside. At first, the children strongly objected: "a whole weekend with no TV, no internet, you must be kidding, right? no way!" But, being a very 'democratic' mother, I insisted.
Our first encounter with the farm was encouraging, though.
Picture
We stopped at the local market. The fresh fruits and vegetables, hand-made crafts and farm animals walking on the loose around us  made the children more open to the experience.
Still, it wasn't that easy. we learnt how to use natural lemon juice and vinegar to avoid mosquito bites, we learnt how to hunt lizards, and operate the water hand pump in the morning to wash our faces.

Picture
After putting the mosquito and  lizards under control, our first night was so serene and peaceful. The sky held more stars than I ever imagined existed. Our morning walks were even more amazing. The local farmers were first surprised and curious. For them, we looked like aliens. Yet, it didn't take long before they showed amazing hospitality and offered to teach us their way of life. Soon enough, Youssof  learnt how to milk the cow to get us fresh milk for breakfast and how to collect the eggs without disturbing the free-wandering chicken.

Picture
Janna, on her side, was baking bread for lunch in, literally, hand-made, oven.
The milk, eggs, home-made cheese and naturally backed bread tasted exceptional.

Picture
In just a weekend, The children discovered much more fun ways of transportation and a much healthier way of life. At the end of our journey, they didn't want to leave. Surprisingly, they did not miss their computer, internet or TV at all. They found real bliss in a much simpler life.
We all long for another weekend at the farm. How I wish life was all that simple!!!

If you have never tried it, please do. Just for one weekend or even for one afternoon. Visit the countryside, the desert, the forest... any place in nature where technology hadn't take its toll on yet. Turn off your mobile and internet connections. No TV, no computer. Enjoy the sunshine, the greenery, listen to the birds, watch the stars. Enjoy simplicity and better yet, hug a tree!!!
